The Great Connectors
While the depots at Owaneco, Velma, and Millersville were vital rural stops, Pana and Taylorville were the industrial anchors of the line. These two cities provided the heavy infrastructure, maintenance, and high-volume traffic that kept the Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) profitable for decades.
Pana: The Junction City
Pana was a railroad powerhouse, famously known as the “City of Roses,” but built on a foundation of coal and steam. At one point, four major railroads intersected here, including the B&O. The Pana trailhead sits at the southern gateway of the trail, where the B&O tracks once skirted the edge of town, carrying locally grown flowers and locally mined coal to markets as far away as New York and St. Louis.
Finding the cache here marks the beginning (or the triumphant end) of your 15-mile journey through the history of the Illinois prairie.

Taylorville: The County Hub
As the seat of Christian County, Taylorville was the primary destination for the farmers and merchants using the B&O line. The railroad ran right into the heart of the city, bringing in the legal, political, and commercial energy of the region. The Taylorville trailhead serves as the northern anchor of the trail, marking the spot where the iron road transitioned from wide-open fields into the bustling urban life of the mid-20th century.
