The Lifeblood of the Village
When the Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) tracks were laid through Christian County, Owaneco became a vital link in the chain of commerce. While Millersville served as a quaint rural outpost, Owaneco was a high-volume shipping point. At its peak, the depot oversaw the movement of thousands of tons of grain from the three massive elevators that once dominated the skyline.
The “Basecamp” Geocache
This location is designated as the Basecamp for our 2026 trail initiatives. In the 1870s, “Basecamp” meant the depot platform—the place where news arrived, families reunited, and the town’s wealth was exported to the world. By placing a cache here, we are marking the spot where the iron horse transformed a prairie settlement into a thriving agricultural center.
Architectural Survival
The depot itself is a testament to the community’s resilience. Unlike many depots that were scrapped for lumber or burned, the Owaneco station was physically moved to ensure its preservation. It stands today as a tangible connection to the men and women who worked the rails and the fields over 150 years ago.
