Projects

The Lincoln Prairie Trail Conservancy is committed to the ongoing improvement and maintenance of the trail for the enjoyment of all. We are excited to present our project list for September, which outlines our current and planned initiatives. This list includes a variety of projects, from trail repairs and ecological restoration to new amenity installations. For a detailed overview of each project, including its status, type, and projected cost, please download the PDF file linked below. We welcome your feedback and support as we continue to enhance the Lincoln Prairie Trail experience.

Project Lists

Phase 1: Identification & Cataloging
Scope: Starting at the Pana Trailhead and extending approximately ¾ of a mile.
Process: Identifying native tree species using the PlantNet mobile app and placing temporary markers.
Verification: Creating a master list for expert review to ensure all species are accurately documented.

Phase 2: Permanent Signage
Installation: Replacing temporary markers with professional, final-version signs.
Conservation: Utilizing tree-safe mounting methods to ensure the permanent signage is displayed without harming the health of the trees.

Phase 3: Educational Outreach & Promotion
Inventory: Developing a comprehensive database of tree species along the trail.
Community Impact: Providing resources for local school educational programs and promoting the Lincoln Prairie Trail as a premier destination for nature enthusiasts.
The project is currently in the Pending phase, which represents the vital period of active planning and preparation. During this stage, we are focused on gathering the necessary resources, technical expertise, and community feedback required to ensure a successful rollout. We are also collaborating with stakeholders to refine the project’s scope and align our goals with the best interests of the Lincoln Prairie Trail. This thoughtful approach allows us to address logistical details and environmental considerations before moving into the physical implementation of Phase 1.
Identification Tools: PlantNet mobile app for accurate tree species verification.

Temporary Markers: Weather-resistant signs and zip ties for initial mapping.

Installation Equipment: A ladder for high-placement mounting to discourage vandalism and ensure visibility.

Transportation: A small truck or ATV/UTV to efficiently transport supplies along the trail.

Future Signage Development
The design for our long-term signage is currently under review. We are prioritizing a durable, high-quality style that will feature integrated QR codes, allowing trail users to access digital educational content and deeper species information instantly.
The overall project cost will be determined by the final count of native tree species identified during the initial phase. To keep early expenses low, we are utilizing several existing resources to begin the cataloging process:

Current Inventory: We have an initial supply of temporary blank signs, zip ties, and documentation materials (notebooks and pens) ready for use.

Scalable Budget: Once the species list is verified and the total number of trees is confirmed, we will finalize the budget for the permanent, QR-coded signage and professional mounting hardware.
