Amsonia hubrichtii – Thread-Leaf Bluestar
Photos and Captions provided by Karen Cherry
An herbaceous perennial that forms bushy clumps up to three feet tall & wide. Terminal clusters of steel blue buds open to small light blue, star shaped, flowers in mid May. Amsonia hubrichtii prefers full sun & well drained medium moist soil.

The nectar of the flowers attracts the Ruby-throated Hummingbird & various long-tongued insects including the Large Carpenter Bee (Xylocopa virginica), Hummingbird moths (Hemaris spp.), & various butterflies. Because the foliage contains a white latex that is toxic, it is avoided by mammalian herbivores.

The stems are densely covered with soft, narrow, needle-like foliage, medium to dark green, in summer, turns a brilliant golden color in fall. A low-maintenance easy to grow plant that could replace a small shrub in the landscape.
